Tips for a great word search
Match the grid to your longest word
The grid has to be at least as wide as your longest word. A 10-letter word needs at least a 12x12 or 15x15 grid to fit comfortably.
Mix directions for a real challenge
Horizontal-only puzzles are easy to skim. Turning on diagonal and "allow backwards words" makes solvers actually search the grid instead of just reading left to right.
Keep the theme tight
A themed list — spelling words, vocabulary terms, a holiday, a birthday kid's favorite things — is more satisfying to solve than a random grab-bag of words, and it reinforces learning if you're using it for class.
Print the answer key separately
